BMW Battery Light Is On & Charging Malfunction

If you've been noticing a battery light that won't go off after starting your car in the morning, there's a good chance your car's charging system is having problems. Your vehicle relies on its charging system to stay functional. That battery light is something you want to get addressed as soon as possible.

At Huffs Automotive, we have a team of ASE Qualified mechanics specializing in European car models. In this post, we look at what the battery light means on your BMW and how you can get it fixed.

What Is the Charging System?

The charging system is a set of components that provide electrical energy for the vehicle's electronics and keeps the battery charged. The charging system powers the dashboard indicators, warning lamps, headlights, radio, relays, fuses, brainbox, and the ECU, among other appliances.

The charging system comprises the battery, voltage regulator, alternator, ECU, and wiring. It serves various roles among them:

  • Provide power to the vehicle's electrical components
  • Keep the vehicle's battery charged through the alternator.
  • Supply electrical current to fire the spark plugs
  • The alternator charges dead batteries while the engine is running.
  • Keeps some of the vehicle's electrical components powered when the engine is not running
  • Sends engine mechanical issues to the engine's ECU through the sensors.

What's Happening When the Battery/Check Charging Light Comes On?

When your BMW battery light comes on, it indicates a problem with the charging system. It also means that the car is now running solely on the battery, and there's a chance the battery is not charging, therefore you might end up with a dead battery at some point.

The light could mean different things for different cars, but it is almost always a charging issue for the many European cars we've worked on at Huffs Automotive East Valley. The best decision is to bring it to our BMW service and repair center for a thorough diagnosis.

What Can Cause My Battery/Check Charging System Light to Come On?

There're a couple of reasons you could be having a charging malfunction battery light on. It is best if you bring in the car for us to have a closer look and identify the source of the problem as several parts can trigger a BMW battery light:

  • Alternator – The alternator is a crucial part of the charging system. You can expect an electrical system malfunction if the alternator has problems. In most cases, the voltage coming from the alternator is low, which can cause the issue. We will test the voltage from the alternator, and if it's a problem, we can repair or replace it with a new one.
  • Battery – The BMW battery light could also be triggered by a dying battery. If the battery can't hold a charge, it needs replacing. During the diagnosis, we will test the battery as well. If it is a problem, we can replace it with a new one.
  • Drive belt – A failing drive belt can also trigger a charging malfunction in a BMW. If the battery light is on, we will need to check if the drive belt is failing. If so we will need to replace it if it is at the end of its life.
  • Wires and connection – Cleaning the connections and ensuring the battery clamps are clean and tight is also part of the diagnosis process. We will also inspect the internal alternator wiring and connection for any burned links.
  • Faulty computer system – Once the alternator and battery are ruled out as the possible causes of the charging malfunction on the BMW, we can consider computer issues. We will test the computer system to identify faults and potential causes of the electrical system malfunction.

In cases where the alternator is the problem, it can also affect air condition functions. Given the heat of the Phoenix Valley, we know how uncomfortable your car can get without a functioning AC.

Is It Safe to Drive If a Battery/Charging System Light Is On?

Drivers are generally cautious about driving with a warning light on the dashboard. The battery charging system warning light is not any different.

Driving around with a charging malfunction could leave you stranded because the electrical system can stop working at any time.

If the light comes on while driving and in the middle of nowhere, it's advisable to keep moving cautiously to where you can find help. However, you should make an appointment with us soon before your car leaves you stranded in the middle of nowhere.
